Im Kkeok-jeong is a historical novel by Hong Myeong-hi (1888~?), which was serialized in Chosun Ilbo for about 10 years from November1928 to March 1939 and loved widely by the public.
The protagonist is a man from a family of butchers (then considered to be one of the lowest social occupations) who becomes the leader first of a group of thieves, and then of a peasant rebellion. Vividly documenting the lives of Joseon commoners, the novel also demonstrates a masterful command of dialects and local slang. After the serialization in the newspaper had completed, Im Kkeok-jeong was first published in 1939 and reprinted several times later on.
